We spent the week before Thanksgiving
(2009) in Puerto Rico. We often spend Thanksgiving week in
Vegas, but we had just been there in July. San Francisco is another favorite, but
it was already on
the horizon for 2010.
Puerto Rico got the nod for a variety of reasons. It would be our first time there; the weather could not be cold; and the flight and lodging deals were right. Airfare was $150 each roundtrip from Orlando and we found a beachfront condo next to the Marriott for about $80/night including cleaning fee and taxes. |
| It's a
good thing I'm not a beach fan; compared to the beautiful white sand
beaches we have in north Florida, such as Panama City, the San Juan
beaches are anemic. The beach is not very wide and often cannot be
seen from the street because of the high rises, although
there's good public access at the end of a street or through a beach
park.
Our condo was centrally located, with a 24-hour Walgreens a block away and a bus stop in front of the Marriott. (I wasn't too surprised that milk was $4 a gallon and a box of cereal $4. It was like that in Hawaii; cost of shipping to an island, I guess.) Many restaurants and night spots were nearby. Most of the fast food chains are in San Juan, especially Subway, which has excellent cafe con leche made with a true espresso maker. But the "dollar" menus are much more limited. |

| We arrived in San Juan about 2:30 after a non-stop flight from Orlando, which was about 90% full. It was about 4:00 by the time we were settled in the condo and so we spent the rest of the day just exploring the neighborhood. The La Concha resort was about three blocks west of us. The Ventana del Mar next to it features a short waterfront boardwalk. |
