Wednesday, Apr 23:

Today was the longest excursion of the trip: a 14-hour day to the Zuni Pueblo near Arizona.  We took the scenic route by leaving I-40 at Grants and proceeding on NM 53, which took us by El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments.  El Malpais (Spanish for "bad country") contains volcanoes, while El Morro is home to Inscription Rock, where passing travelers as far back as 300 years ago inscribed their names on a rock. (I-40 parallels Route 66 in many places.)

Next time, I'll reverse the route by taking I-40 to Gallup and down to Zuni, returning on NM 53. Because of the Malpais and Morro stops, by the time we arrived at Zuni, the last tour was over and we arrived in Gallup after 5 PM, so we missed that too.
