GRANADA

Granada was our entry into Andalucia... the first of five cities we would visit there. I was intrigued by the idea of an overnight sleeper train from Barcelona but Iberia's Spanish website offered me a deal I could not refuse.  Internet research revealed that renting an apartment offered more for less than a hotel. We enjoyed a one bedroom located just off Plaza Nueva. At the top of six floors, it had a magnificent balcony view of the Alhambra. We often ended an evening on the balcony with a glass of Montroy while watching the Alhambra floodlights.

Gran Via is Granada's main north-to-south thoroughfare. A main intersection is Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Monarchs), named for Ferdinand and Isabel.  This intersection is the center of Granada; Plaza Nueva and other plazas are nearby, as is the Cathedral. At the intersection is the Columbus monument, commemorating Isabel's agreement to sponsor Columbus' journey to find a new passage to India by sailing west.

Just off Plaza Nueva is Calle Elvira. This is Granada's "hippie" area, and includes tea rooms.
