Sevilla

During the age of Spanish conquest, explorers such as Magellan sailed from Sevilla's Guadalquivir River harbor to the Atlantic.  The gold, silver and goods they returned with propelled Sevilla into Spain's largest and richest city.

Today, Andalucia's capital  is the country's fourth largest city and a perfect base for excursions to Cordoba and the sherry region surrounding Jerez.

Ronda's mountainous location made it faster to take a bus (2 1/2 hours) to Sevilla rather than a train, which would have required us to go north, change trains and then have to backtrack southwest.  The bus ride provided more views of olive orchards and the Sierras.

As in Granada, we stayed in an apartment located on the Alameda de Hercules, the city's largest promenade (but it was completely torn up for renovation). The cafes and bars on either side were open.

From our apartment, we were a 10-minuite walk from the Guadalquiver, which I recalled from junior high world history class.  So of course, one of our paseo was to walk the river from our "western" edge of the central city to the "eastern" edge.
