Newspaper Rock State Park features many petroglyphs, possibly  as old as 1500 years. The faint drawings at the top are the oldest; drawings  of mounted Indians reflect the European period.  Near Blanding, Edge of the Cedars State Park offers a preview of the larger Anasazi ruins at Hovenweep. These ruins are from about 700 A.D. The depression in the foreground was formerly a kiva, a ceremonial area.

The Butler Wash Rest Stop trail ends at a cliff dwelling about 700 years old which is a preview to the Mesa Verde ruins.   The ruins here include 4 kivas, storage areas and dwelling rooms.  The cliffs provide both a natural roof and excellent defensive position against enemies.
The Mule Canyon Ruin is also about 700 years old.  This is a close-up of the kiva.
