Zion National Park
(established 1919)

Our first stop was to have been the Grand Canyon's north rim, but since it had snowed there the day before (in mid-October) we decided to go on to Zion.  You need two days to see all of Zion because the park has two areas accessible only through separate entrances.  Since the Kolob Canyons entrance was out of the direction we were traveling in, we had to miss that northwest portion of the park in favor of the "main" Zion where we hoped to hike the Narrows.

Since we missed the 7 mile hike to Kolob Arch in northwest Zion, we had to settle for this postcard of one of the longest free standing arches, a preview to Arches National Park. Angel's Landing from the Hidden Canyon trail, a portion of which has chains in the canyon walls to hold onto for balance and footing.

At the Narrows Gateway trail, which leads to the Narrows Trail.

The Narrows trail leads through a
section of the Virgin River where the canyon walls are 20 feet apart and over 1000 feet high. That's Susie on the right at the Narrows entrance but the river was too high to hike.

We hiked the Canyon Overlook
Trail instead and found it quite scenic.

Can you see the hikers I included in this photo for perspective?

Even the views outside the parks are impressive.  This is a few miles outside Zion.  That formation in the foreground is appropriately called a "beehive." Red Canyon, outside Bryce Canyon, gave us a preview of both the hoodoos and the snow we would find at Bryce.
